Hemp Oil ProductsHemp has been getting a lot of news recently, but did you know that it’s actually an ancient crop? The earliest signs of hemp being cultivated date way back around 10,000 B.C. in China. The Chinese used hemp to create rope imprints on pottery, as well as to create clothing, bowstrings, and paper. Eventually, paper making traveled to Japan in the fifth century A.D. Much later, Europeans used the product for food and textiles.

Over in America, hemp was actually used to help create thread, cloth, paper, food, and was even used to trade with. Inthe early 17th century, states like Virginia, Massachusetts, and Connecticut mandated that farmers sow flax and hemp seeds. It was then exported to England and was used for shoes, maps, books, baggage, and many other hemp-based products. Even presidents grew the crop on their plantations, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin.

It wasn’t until the 20th century when organizations realized hemp’s relationship to marijuana and weren’t aware of the plant’s differences. Laws were soon written that restricted the growing of hemp and in 1937, the government passed the Marijuana Tax Act, which had a significant impact on the industry.

Hemp For Victory

During World War II, the U.S. Department of Agriculture ran a program to motivate farmers to grow and cultivate the crop. Why? The Navy had a high demand for Manila hemp rope, which was used in the ship’s rigging. Farmers were then encouraged to grow hemp in order to produce hemp products and help the Navy restore their supply. After the war was over, the government restricted the growth of hemp again. However, between 1942 and 1946, American farmers produced 42,000 tons of hemp fiber each year. That’s a lot of hemp products.
